Last time anything like this happened was OG AOL, which was sort of a walled-off self-contained proto-social network (ie AOM and exclusive chatrooms and forums)

I wouldn't be surprised if the long-term future of twitter is to become just another mastodon instance. I remember places like CompuServe and AOL providing their own "premium" services, before breaking down and just providing email and www like everyone else.

some of y’all never got punted from AOL or banned from a forums board for bumping into an admin who woke up on the wrong side of the bed and it’s really obvious lately

the problem with the internet today is you're just connected at all times and it's so impersonal i miss when the AOL guy would say 'welcome!' when you logged in and 'goodbye' when you signed off.
