@CincinnatiPhil If it was in the alt.* hierarchy it was a real crapshoot, but this was before “Eternal September’ (when AOL went on the Internet) so it exceeded FBook on its worst day. Tim Berniers-Lee & Marc Anderson both made their initial announcements on Usenet.

@2000_mondo Didn't mean to offend. Mostly. Jude was my mentor, greatest thing she taught me was that to write or code or live the snazziest strategy was to construct/deconstruct. That was her. Never met the lady but i hacked forty aol accounts when I was kid and we were homies

@gundog11 Never actually went to one, my ex wouldn't let me, but later on groups of us did meet up, then there was my wedding and a yr later another AOL partnership got married. Most of us keep in touch thru messenger now and covid not helped, but we drop each other a line to check up

Most painful process: getting the winmodem (i.e. minimal hardware modem that uses software heavily) working in Linux. Try to connect to Australia On Line (AOL) in Linux, fail, write down error, reboot to Windows, dial up sounds, search for solution, reboot, repeat ad nauseam 🦥

@mental_floss Note that this article contains an inaccuracy: Real Genius was not promoted on the Internet but rather via CompuServe which at the time was a self-contained (and very expensive) dialup online service like AOL, GEnie and others. It later became an ISP in the 90s.
