AOL used to have teen discussion boards and chat rooms that were moderated in a way that prevented people from being awful to each other. LiveJournal made it much more possible to make choices about who you did and didn’t interact with.

I never wondered why we used CompuServe for internet rather than AOL, but learning my aunt got us banned from AOL to this day by saying *something* we don’t know like 25 years ago has answered that mystery.
