@_AntaBaka_ @USofRhetorica yup, but AOL offered a gate to ‚the internet‘ (winsock32.dll) which in fact was the only solution for us Dorfdeppen to connect at Ortstarif. iirc it was 1993.

i think part of my problem is i know theoretically how gnb works but for some reason trying to put it into practice my brain just makes aol dial up noises

@jeffalomaniac 94 was AOL & Geocities and getting in trouble because AOL you paid to be online per minute. Then I remember in 1996 or 97 working at the local ISP and upgrading our infra to support 56K modems and then downloading stuff to Zip disks at home!

Man, some of y’all never had to grow up in the AOL or Yahoo Messenger days and it shows. Back then, it was a catfish girl hitting you up. Now, it’s some dude posing as someone you follow on Twitter or Discord. Same hustle, but higher consequences now.

I wish I can go back in time and never use AOL as an email or at least swap out way sooner
