It was astounding success. So Brandt quadrupled down on the strategy. The goal was to get an AOL disc with a free trial into the hands of every person who might even close to a computer. She also arranged for almost every computer shipped to have an AOL disc packed inside.

  • robsterwarrior MrRobster (@robsterwarrior) reported

@aolmail FYI was maintaining spam email filters in *2002*. Your tech must be older than that, since it is not ‘learning’ as previously advised and is still passing on the same old repeated (American) crap.

  • kevinbinversie Kevin Binversie (@kevinbinversie) reported

@mattklewis Every time I think about copyright law and popular characters, I can’t think help but wince at what DC Comics and its corporate parents (Warner Bros., TIME, AOL, and now WarnerMedia) have done to Superman’s creators and their heirs over the decades.

At one point, 50% of CDs produced worldwide had AOL logos printed on them. And I bet you're wondering, "Why didn't Microsoft or the other companies copy it?" Well, according to Brandt, they thought it was insanely stupid. Probably due to their aversion to risk taking or costs.

  • bokmann bokmann (@bokmann) reported

@chantalmclaugh @jayquintana_jr @girdley In spring 1992 I was a beta tester of aol’s email gateway to the public internet. By Fall 1993 those of us who were around in the before-times referred to Fall of 1993 as ‘Eternal September’, because the influx of new users never stopped. 1996 is way too late.
