Bradley S. Klein 🇺🇦 (@BradleySKlein) reportedI’m sure this will sound like the roar of a dinosaur, but as a (remaining) AOL user, I had a serious tech issue of access, called them, they answered, and a very helpful, patient human walked me through a reprogramming procedure with one of my computers to restore access. Easy

Greg Manuel (He/Him: GIFT SHOP IN BIO!) (@WriterComicNYer) reported@SADDAY_EVERYDAY WCW would still be here today if AOL/Time Warner cared about pro wrestling at LEAST enough to sell it to Bischoff. Guaranteed money wouldn't have done ****. They wouldn't have gone broke trying to pay Hulk Hogan. It's stupid to think otherwise.
-
Ya Filthy Animal (@PatSoxCeltBruin) reported@TrollFootball While this is true, I can’t really talk ****, when I was 19 I was stocking can’s on a shelf and spent my nights on AOL messenger.
-
Michael Morrell (@michaelmorrell) reported@immaterial_ink @solanamobile fully onchain chat protocol like aol instant messenger. pgp for dms. powered by memo program or something. biggest blocker is adoption friction i.e. getting it in an existing wallet app, and/or getting pkeys imported, and establishing a network effect

On Orbit Satellite 📻 (@KM4OOS_EM71) reportedAOL Instant Messenger never needed a data center. I fail to see your point. Can I host a social media server? I fail to see your point.
-
StockCrusher (@stonksamiam) reported@grok why is your latency so slow compared to ChatGpt, Gemini, Claude, etc. I wait and wait and wait while you think. Reminds me of AOL dial up in the 90s.

Michael TheZorch Haney aka The Professor (@thezorch) reported@ColonelFalcon Back in the day, people thought AOL was too big to fail. Then they did, and very quickly. Their massive campus complex was leveled to build a data center that serviced the many startups that sprang up around them in Silicon Valley. Sony is not too big to fail either.
-
Ruben (@rubenleija_) reportedOne of the biggest problems with old tech like @AOL is that they starved their engineers of creativity. too much legal reviews. never ending bureaucracy. now a lot of those engineers are laid off and entering a world that's changed dramatically.
-
Greg Manuel (He/Him: GIFT SHOP IN BIO!) (@WriterComicNYer) reported@KydJustice Guaranteed money didn't almost ruin wrestling. Lack of variety almost did. Guaranteed money in the form of Ted Turner ensured WCW stayed afloat. AOL/Time Warner's disinterest in keeping WCW led to the Bottleneck Era. Brooks is being full of ****. As per usual.

Click /Kael Vulpis/ Dopamine (@ClickDopamine) reported@4thOfJuly365 You know I absolutely hated AOL but I liked the messenger because I could talk to stupid people I knew on that. Other people used icq and even that's out of business. And then there were some MSN people. I don't know what was up with them. I of course used some crazy open source thing that linked all this stuff together. And yeah, there isn't much that really makes this platform. All that special doesn't really do anything unique other than have people on it. I could scale my platform to millions pretty easily but what's missing from my platform is people. That's the real value
