    Oh yes, and back in the waaaay old days (like 1994) internet services (or their closed-circuit predecessors like Prodigy, AOL, and Compuserve) charged BY THe HOUR for service. Think about how many people would stay off the internet if that were the truth today!

    @Tilly33368 @SwedishCanary @gmail Just about anything. Gmail is the worst service I use. It's a spam magnet, and Google scans your mail. I've had AOL for years; zero spam, ever.

    @BonnieBellG Nope. I work for AOL (well the company used to be AOL) AIM was shut down a while ago. Even if it wasn’t I will make it my mission in life to make sure that never happens.

    @trish_regan @masonbo This is frightening. I'm almost 68 yrs old. and have never seen anything like this. I started out on the Internet when it was just Chat Rooms/Bulletin Boards. Prodigy and AOL. Crying out loud.

    The courts declared AOL an illegal, abusive monopoly in the grounds that it excluded potential competitors from interoperating. That's it. By law, if you offer a digital service in the US and you prohibit interoperation, you are engaging in illegal, anticompetitive behavior.

    @Msmariablack @Humanstein Probably about the same for me. I could pin it down I cared that much. but I was totally in AOL before 4.0, but I think after 3.0. I remember the 3.5 disks.
