Oh yes, and back in the waaaay old days (like 1994) internet services (or their closed-circuit predecessors like Prodigy, AOL, and Compuserve) charged BY THe HOUR for service. Think about how many people would stay off the internet if that were the truth today!

@iainthomson @morphany when I told the kids who ran the finance channel at AOL UK about insurance as betting your house won't burn down they made keyword IBETMYHOUSEWON'TBURNDOWN as a synonym for keyword INSURANCE

@PJWheeler83 lol had that for a bit. Would just connect to the aol ISP then minimize their garbage interface and open an actual browser.

And just to follow up, In 2000, "Big Tech" was AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail and MySpace. They are all either dead or so deeply on life support that their kids are creeped out looking at them and make excuses not to visit. Big Tech of 2021 is not immune to competition or the same fate.

  • AdrienneRoyer Adrienne (@AdrienneRoyer) reported

There’s also a track record of the monolithic tech companies becoming so big that they cause problems. Media pounces. Government investigates. Platform attempts to appease everyone. They start to suck, and competitors grow. See AOL, Yahoo, MySpace, Blackberry, Microsoft, IBM...

.@AOL @AOLSupportHelp you are absolutely terrible! Your customer service is a joke! Can't answer simple questions, will not connect you with a supervisor...and want you to PAY for support...wow. Get a clue AOL!

  • CryptoHog4 Crypto Hog (@CryptoHog4) reported

@TeddyErickson7 @GarlicIn @XRPNews_ I'm scared a bit. China represents 56% of miners. CCP can grid-keep, blockchain is outdated. Eth 2.0 looks like the failed AOL revamp when Time Warner bought them. Plus the fact that gas tokens are a sad reality on their network.

  • SiliconBrian BDP (@SiliconBrian) reported

@JamieNoTweet Have you tried googling "how do I cancel AOL?" for ideas?
