During the late 80s and 90s, lots of us did pay for a service like Twitter. CompuServe, Prodigy, AOL. I subscribed to the first, and also, locally, ECHO. ECHO was cool. I don't remember anyone declaring, "ECHO should pay me." But there was no advertising.

@mfratto @signalapp The most amusing part of this for me is that the people now running signal product roadmap now actually think we're stupid enough to recruit other people to use signal when they've just deadheaded the platform for us. They probably used to work at AOL so they can't help it

@Helen_Highly Nah, AOL was destined to fail. Apple! They were about to declare bankruptcy in the '97ish. Their stock was junk. I had a couple of grand I was going to invest. I didn't. 🥹

Crypto is the biggest scam of my lifetime. So fkn glad I never got into that bullshit. Literally every product that derived off bitcoin has been a massive Ponzi scheme. I am just pissed my boss @Cokedupoptions missed that boat trying to get AOL back on top of tech.
