Remember when the AOL free trial CDs would come in the mail, sometimes in a tin box. I’d try to get online and I’d get all the way on to the point when it asks for credit card and then be like ****

Will someone make a meme please about people who are still mad that U2 conspired with Apple to give them free music that they didn’t like? You know? They setup their new computer and there’s like AOL or something on it and they ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Free U2 and they lose their ****?!

Few (if anyone) remembers that the online service, Prodigy, died after it was revealed their algorithms were blocking any mention of their competitor, AOL. This is where Twitter is headed under Elon Musk.

@wjmaggos @lolennui @AOL GenX who started 9n BBSs and migrated to a local ISP using PINE and telnetting into MOOs and MUSHes, hand coded Angelfire sites, did OEM tech support and ISP tech support for dial up and cable internet, and never once used AOL here, and Mastodon makes zero sense.

@or_rain @lolennui @AOL why? kinda hard to believe. I'm nowhere near that level and had no problem. Are you trying to run your own instance or just create an account and follow some people?

@wjmaggos @lolennui @AOL Just finding better messaging than talking about servers/instances/federation would help so much. Also Mastodon needs much better search/discovery so people find a better starting point when they first join, though some of that will improve as the network grows. 2/2

@jonostrower These comments were said when Compuserve, AOL, Yahoo Groups shut down. I used to miss some of the BBS’ I followed. Platforms come and go. Sometimes better ones emerge. I have a Mastodon account now. It’s interesting and there’s a learning curve. We’ll see where it goes.
