Something I remembered about AOL Instant Messenger: when you added someone to your buddy list, that person didn’t know!!! Unless you IM’d that person, they would never know that you knew them??? So weird, is there any social network like that anymore?

First thing I ever bought on the internet? A Stone Cold Steve Austin t-shirt on WWE Shopzone on AOL in 7th grade. The most recent thing I bought? Garbage disposal soap. 🎶 Oh how the years go by.... 🎶

  • cascio Jamais Cascio (@cascio) reported

@danielharan @Vadeboncoeur_Al No problem. The critiques at the time seemed that I recall seemed very focused on the pathologies of the specific platform — AOL, Usenet, CompuServe, etc.

@thejoycelai This is fkn dumb. Just straight up. This is dumb. Wtf is ripple? You mean $xrp? A decentralized coin. Which is used by ripple, a company with an enormous connection with central banks & governments. #Bitcoin is #Aol. Enough said.

  • rcjparry RCJParry (@rcjparry) reported

@Popehat @VerizonBusiness @VerizonSupport When I was in MBA school I went to an AOL customer support center. Watched a text chat w/ English dude trying to cancel service because his new wife had it Converation was guided by a tree-style script. "I'll go ahead and cancel your service" was not a branch of the script.

  • DebbieeeCo debbieeeCo (SMMShowciety) (@DebbieeeCo) reported

@JacksofAmerica I did. AOL didn’t let us use the internet and the phone at the same time since we used it on dial up. I remember the god awful sound you’d hear if you accidentally picked up the phone when someone was online too.

@SonnyBunch Right, but AOL was raking in dial-up cash for like a decade after that model "died" How is there no service willing to milk money from senior citizens who would rather just pay more to not have to deal with this new model?
