@maximlott @PCivilization @PrisonPlanet The barriers to creating a web site are far lower than creating a power company. We’ve had competing social network companies for years, from AOL to MySpace to G+. Creating another WalMart would be harder, but we don’t demand they give away products for free.

@octothorpe PCPursuit wasn’t shenanigans. Totally legit service that let you use TeleNet (dial up backbone used by aol and compuserve) to make outbound calls in other regions. Was like $30/month. Now you could get to places to learn about shenanigans using it…

@RCNconnects A special congratulations to astound. I am astounded my Internet has gone down six times in 3 1/2 weeks. Ever since the switch it’s the worst Internet service I’ve ever had and 20 years. AOL dial up is better than this. Avoid astound like the plague my friends.

I doxxed myself in 1991. I've been GRCooper in various Web1-3 venues since AOL only dreamed of being on CDs. That's because my first few years on Usenet, I was kind of an *******. I figured if I had no anonymity, I'd be nicer. It didn't work.

Does anyone remember all the AOL floppy discs and then cd’s that were on so many magazines? What a terrible waste they were and no doubt filling landfills. Hate to think how many there were.

Prodigy, as an online service (backed by the likes of CBS, IBM and Sears) had been around for over a decade. Letterman was likely aware of it, if not familiar with it. AOL at the time was also a similar online service and had only just given it's uses access to a WWW browser

I have become the old person now who gets super nostalgic for my teenage years when I see people using dial up/aol on a computer in a tv show or movie. Kids these days will never understand the patience we had to have when someone was using the phone line.
