Evidently KCOM are having issues today. Therefore all internet access is down. Home and also businesses. I can't even buy milk from the Co-op as they are also affected. Maybe having a monopoly over such a large area isn't such a good idea after all ...

KCOM having another internet outage in #Hull. The service has been periodically unreliable recently.

@thomasforth Hull's network was owned by the council. Due to an accident of history, it retained its local monopoly long after BT had to let others onto its network. As Oftel (sic) homed in, KCOM invested heavily in broadband technologies, to fend off BT and compete outside its area.

@ciaran296 @KCOMhome I know it might be hard to believe (especially after today's outage) when I say this, but as someone who has lived outside of hull, kcom lightstream is actually more reliable and stable then some of the providers of had elsewhere

@Tosh_ag @MikeeP1981 It's always worth having a secondary dns. Most of the time I don't realise kcom is down, cos of a back up dns I entered years ago. Anyhoos, main router settings, look for gateway settings, and as secondary put googles (8.8.8.8) or search net for others, in primary put kcoms....

@lucyk512 To get the data to your local mast, the mobile networks will use a line to the mast. In the rest of the country there's a choice of providers. In Hull there's KCom. So if it's a core problem with KCom, that probably explains the reason

@steviee_p @PollardRach But whether it’s the only provider or not, if the service is ****, it’s ****. I lived in hull for 3 years and knew tonnes of people on it (50+) and every single person had a bad experience. You could say the same about reviews for every company but none are as bad as Kcom

BREAKING: Starlink has received another major regulatory win in the UK. 🇬🇧 The UK's communications regulator, Ofcom, has confirmed that Starlink qualifies as a viable broadband alternative under the country's 10 Mbps Broadband USO rules. • Confirmation provided directly to ISPreview • Properties with affordable Starlink access may no longer be eligible for a USO connection from BT or KCOM • Some USO requests have already been declined because Starlink service was available • Ofcom previously said lower-cost Starlink plans reduced the number of underserved premises to around 4,000 The decision further reinforces Starlink's role as a trusted broadband option for rural and hard-to-reach communities.
