CompuServe when I first got online in 1995, MSN Messenger, the very occasional foray into Usenet. Tried AOL, ICQ, a few others. But never enjoyed them. Had both AIM and Yahoo Meseenger But only very rarely used them.

As the 90s progressed and broadband started rolling out, folks started gradually moving away from AOL. It began with “provide your own access” — allowing access with a separate dial-up / broadband provider, to leaving the network altogether.

@mediarchaeology Oh, and I see people mentioning BBSes and AOL. I used both, but never thought about them as social media. (Though I definitely think they count.) For me personally, they weren't "social" though. I mostly used them to download games and utilities.
