sprint (@sspriint) reportedAOL and Time Warner merged in a $165,000,000,000 deal, and two years later the company wrote off $99,000,000,000 in a single year. The announcement came in January 2000, weeks before the dot-com peak. An internet company buying one of the largest media empires on earth. AOL was the smaller business by revenue and profit. It had the stock price, which was the currency that made the deal possible. Steve Case and Gerald Levin stood on stage and called it the future. Dial-up subscribers plus film studios, cable systems, magazines, and music. Then the bubble burst. AOL's advertising revenue collapsed, and the subscriber business began dying as broadband arrived and nobody needed dial-up anymore. The cultures never combined. Time Warner executives resented being bought with inflated paper, and the AOL side found the media business slow. In 2002 the company reported a loss of about $99,000,000,000, the largest annual loss in American corporate history. Almost all of it was writing down the value of AOL itself. The AOL name came off the company in 2003. The two businesses split apart entirely in 2009. Levin later apologized publicly and called himself responsible. The biggest deal ever signed destroyed more value than most companies ever create.

NASDAQ Gallery (@TP_TIGER98) reportedBending Spoons($BSP ) is best understood as a software holding company built around recurring cash flow. Its playbook is direct: buy a digital business with proven demand, rebuild the product and cost base, improve pricing and conversion, then reinvest the cash into another acquisition. Evernote, Vimeo, WeTransfer, Remini and AOL are assets inside that operating system. The numbers make the model clear. In Q1 2026, subscriptions produced 84% of revenue, advertising 12%, and other sources 4%. Revenue grew from $387 million in 2023 to $1.31 billion in 2025, with acquisitions driving much of the increase. The figure I keep coming back to is customer tenure. In Q1 2026, 48% of subscription revenue came from customers with at least five years of tenure, including 28% from customers with at least ten. That gives Bending Spoons time to make deep changes to products it plans to own for the long run. The investment case comes down to execution: buy well, improve the asset, and compound the cash. The risk follows the same logic. Acquisition-led growth only compounds if management keeps choosing the right targets and improves them without weakening products that users already depend on.

🔥🗞The Informant (@theinformant_x) reported🇬🇷 Three people were killed when a private helicopter crashed on the Greek island of Sifnos (Cyclades) shortly after 6 p.m. local time on Monday, Aug. 17, per the Greek fire brigade (via Reuters). The aircraft went down in the Tholos neighborhood near homes and burst into flames, sparking a brush fire that crews brought under control. The dead are the pilot and two passengers. According to unconfirmed local reports, those on board were a newly-married British couple and the Greek pilot; the helicopter had reportedly taken off from a helipad in eastern Attica bound for Sifnos and crashed shortly after departure. Authorities have not officially confirmed the victims' identities. One correction: early reports of six dead were incorrect — the confirmed toll is three. The cause is unknown and under investigation by Greek aviation authorities. It has not been established that a loss of control caused the crash, so early explanations should be treated with caution.
