  • KevR75 Kevin R (@KevR75) reported

@BecMcGee Back in the AOL chatroom days, there was a bunch of us from a local chatroom that would hang out, clubs, bars, beach and whatever else sounded fun.

  • TylerHughs Tyler Hughs (@TylerHughs) reported

In the early days of the internet, in a "room" on AOL, some newb asked what LOL meant. I jokingly said LOG OFF LOSER. Then they suddenly logged off. I've often worried that person left the internet and never came back. Maybe my careless cruelty did them a favor.

  • CaptFamous Horace Van der Graafer (@CaptFamous) reported

@itsbaberuth Running a separate dial up login to AOL just to download emails

  • mcuban Mark Cuban (@mcuban) reported

@AriDavidPaul AOL was a closed network. By definition you had to pay to join, that makes a network effect very difficult. They were just big. Netscape is a better example. They got beat, but their network effect helped move the Internet towards ubiquity

  • LisaCarterMT mountainmama (@LisaCarterMT) reported

@azeem Free AOL floppy at the grocery store and dial up service that made your phone ring busy.

  • _JoeMills_ Joe Mills 🇺🇸 (@_JoeMills_) reported

@azeem @theycallmebreno That was an AOL thing. They dumbed the internet down for the masses.

  • MetalHaze Alex (@MetalHaze) reported

In case you’re curious. It takes about 11 years before web browsers and web services stop supporting your computer. (Currently updating my father-in-law’s MacBook Pro from Yosemite to High Sierra because Chrome and AOL dot com no longer support Yosemite.)

  • balmayne_ Balmore (@balmayne_) reported

I was talking to a claims agent for my dad and the guy asked what’s a good email I gave him my AOL cause that’s the burner email foo said “aol? Oh wow.” Wtf
