@Miss_Snuffy Self pity finds many friends online from the earliest days of community forums up to today's toxic social media. "Share your support" we used to say at AOL and people did and lots was valuable, but a deep streak of 'alternative truth' bedded down there too to solicit attention.

Lorraine King (@lorrainemking) reported from Brentford, England

@NW6Rd You've just reminded me my contract is up with my absolutely appalling @SkyUK broadband. It's so slow it's like AOL dial-up

@KwakuMMNT 112 by default. Jagged Edge were broadcasting to us using 2001 AOL dial up. Horrible signal.

Lately have been thinking about it. There was internet, there were computers, there were even messengers too (Yahoo, AOL, MSN etc.) and later social media as well (Orkut, OG Facebook). And then iPhone, apps, messaging etc. Everything that we have taken for granted today existed back then in some shape or form but overall the outlook was very utopian. I am sure every generation looks back at their formative years with some nostalgia, but damn mid 2000s to early 2010s was some life.

Hello I'm an AOL Admin, we need you to confirm your password due to errors on our end which you will be credited for monthly why does my cdrom drive keep opening

@someguyonx97 @AskYoshik Internet growth was overhyped I never witnessed it's abilities and cost/value overhyped though like AI. People could readily afford internet access and 5th graders could use it to its potential via AOL or Netscape. Not so much for AI We agree the bubble pop is going to be big

  • flyfour
    Flyfour (@flyfour) reported

@EdmundAvalon @SorchaEastwood AOL didn't launch in the UK until 1995, Freeserve not until 1998. Even then it was expensive, speeds were snails pace and adoption was slow. I'd say very few people were "online" in 1994.

  • SpaceMonkey41
    Space Monkey (@SpaceMonkey41) reported

@DavidWolfe I was always skeptical of the moon landing. I started down the rabbit hole in the very early days of the internet. I had a dial up modem, and accessed the net via an aol cd

@YTLG4EVER @The_RedW0lf @Grummz Lol Sony BMG and AOL are just two different class action lawsuits into this hardware/software issue

  • FactsMakeYouCry
    AEW is overrated (@FactsMakeYouCry) reported

@Boston_Elite17 @davidleary9981 @SammyGr43595219 Even WCW a far more successful company than AEW had to bow down to AOL back then. And got dropped.

  • dorkweeb

@ExistentialEnso More like saying “I’ve never used Hotmail” or “I’ve never used AOL” or “I’ve never used Netscape Navigator.”

  • charliekilo552

@MVdlJCardinal I had work email/Internet in 1986 (admittedly at IBM, a tech company) and personal email the same year. TVO provided a free email service long before AOL, Hotmail, Bell, etc.
