    @no1eliofan For the vast vast vast majority of players, you could talk to your friends over the phone, message them over AOL, or just see them the next day at school So why write down a message onto mail, give it to a pokemon, and trade them that pokemon to send a message?

    AOL and Time Warner didn’t just pay for what the two companies were worth in January 2000. They paid for what they believed the two companies could become together. The announced merger was valued at roughly $350B, with AOL shareholders expected to own about 55% of the combined company. The logic was easy to understand: combine AOL’s internet business with Time Warner’s media assets and create value neither could generate alone. But there was a financial problem hiding inside that logic. Future synergies are uncertain. The merger closed in January 2001. SEC disclosures later put the acquisition cost at approximately $147B. Then came the accounting reckoning. In 2002, the combined company reported a $98.7B net loss, including a $54.2B goodwill impairment. That $54.2B was non-cash. It did not mean the company suddenly paid out $54.2B in cash. It meant the value previously assigned to acquired goodwill could no longer be supported at the same level. That distinction matters. When you pay upfront for future synergies, you are effectively putting a price on value that still depends on execution. If the synergies arrive, the premium can make sense. If they don’t, shareholders can end up carrying the cost. The most expensive synergy is the one you pay for before you prove it exists.

    @90sWWE WCW’s demise wasn’t just down to AOL and Time Warner’s merger. From the executive level to day to day operations to creative to talent, it was badly run with more people in it for themselves than the collective benefit.

    @Kngsolo305 I was late Gen X. I definitely got a bug dose of video games and AOL hit me hard right after high school. I remember being grounded from going outside and having to stay in my room. It was horrible. Now, kids are punished by NOT being allowed to sit in their rooms. So much has changed.

    @Irina_exh 18 for sure, Aunt had a waterbed. I tried it, it was terrible, and I never used an AOL address. I was a yahoo guy. Still have it. I did, however, use those cds that gave you internet time.

    AOL had spent years building the perfect internet company for the dial-up era. But the world moved on from it Consumers discovered that broadband was faster, and free to access ...and unlike AOL, it didn’t tie up the telephone lines Suddenly, paying $20/month for AOL's internet access and curated content made less sense when broadband offered a faster, more limitless web. AOL's subscriber base fell from 26.7 million at its peak to roughly 10 million by 2007. This was its second major revenue stream And it was down 62%. How could this company take Time Warner into the future they hoped for?
