  • YardleyShooting
Mike Yardley (@YardleyShooting) reported from City of London, England

I was told by a rep ref. AOL: "it's a very old platform.." as if that was an excuse. If it doesn't work, they shouldn't take my money. @TalkTalk is a useless outfit too. I was called for months by fake Indian call centres after their data hack. My home internet sucks. @AOL @Ofcom

  • OrrinEdenfield

  • chrisromerlee
Chris Romer-Lee (@chrisromerlee) reported from Lambeth, England

@aolmail A family member has received the most appalling customer service from #aol. Utterly shocking. All she wants to do is reset the password as she’s been locked out & the response was effectively, go away and set up another account. She has replied, but I’m not happy.

  • bhutch41
Brian Hutchinson (@bhutch41) reported from Lambeth, England

@AOLSupportHelp Hi Guys, password prompt now so frequent; every time I open my AOL email account. Please ask your engineers to fix quickly. Thanks so much.

  • YardleyShooting
Mike Yardley (@YardleyShooting) reported from City of London, England

Utterly useless service from AOL/Yahoo/TalkTalk yet again following my complaint reference the breakdown/failure of their systems. So irritating when you pay for a service and don't get it. I was told by a rep ref. AOL: "it's a very old platform.." as if that was an excuse. @AOL

  • bhutch41
Brian Hutchinson (@bhutch41) reported from Lambeth, England

Mic Wright 🏳️‍🌈🏴‍☠️ (@brokenbottleboy) reported from Poplar, England

When it first arrived — and I made a blog there within the first two months of its public existence — @tumblr was the near perfect blogging platform. Then AOL destroyed it. Now it’s a horrible jail where I can’t get rid of this dumb screen. Thanks @automatic.

@FCJaymes All I had was AOL IM and very limited texts even in high school, and none of that before haha. Social media is horrible for the mind of a kid. I can't imagine growing up with it. It would have been an entirely different experience, and I doubt in a good way

@ThatJohnJones Compuserve - there's a blast from the past! My first personal computing experience was a Viglen Genie circa 1990 My first personal internet connection was AOL - which I installed via a disc sent in the post Censorship was zero & the internet was amazing, if infuriatingly slow

  • MrGeorgeCheng
    George Cheng (@MrGeorgeCheng) reported

AOL had 30M users, and the internet locked down. Then the open web ate it. Anthropic and OpenAI are playing AOL right now. The Fable 5 rug pull just showed every enterprise exactly what it looks like to depend on closed AI. The off switch exists. Someone else holds it. Llama, Mistral, Qwen - they're not "almost as good" anymore. For most enterprise workloads, they're good enough. And they run on your own hardware. Apple MLX + NVIDIA RTX Spark laptops + rapidly improving open weights = the mainframe-to-PC transition, happening in real time. Open-source AI will do to Frontier Labs what the open internet did to AOL. History doesn't always repeat itself, but it certainly rhymes. The only question is how long you keep building on someone else's infrastructure before you start owning yours.

@llandoniffirg 18, unless you count a word processor typewriter as a typewriter then 19. I purposefully never had an AOL account. I remember when the AO-HELLERS first came online back before the web; the days of Archie, ELM, Veronica, and chat boards. I'd have added BBS to the list though.

  • AbsolutelyMalc1
    Inside Agitator (@AbsolutelyMalc1) reported

@CodeByPoonam "most companies won't do this" actually most tech companies do this. AOL also minted thousands of paper millionaire employees, including janitors. then they acquired Time Warner and the stock went down every day after
