  @dakroot I started...1994? Intro to computer science I was sold & never looked back. ICQ (messenger) predated aol msgr, it was pretty cool, & i did like chatrooms. I worked nights & usually stayed up all night doing homework, so they were good ways to "socialize" around my crazy hours.

  Airtable was worth $11 billion in 2021. Bending Spoons just bought it for an equity value of $2.25 billion. That's not a down round, that's a crater — roughly 80% of the value evaporated for the VCs who backed it, including Silver Lake and Salesforce Ventures. What makes this deal different from Bending Spoons' usual playbook is the customer. Evernote, WeTransfer, AOL — those are consumer brands, and the formula was always the same: acquire, cut headcount hard, optimize monetization, never sell. WeTransfer tested that formula's limits last year when a terms update tried to claim AI-training rights over user files, and had to reverse course within days. Airtable's customer base is 80% of the Fortune 100, running actual operational workflows on the platform, not casual file transfers. The same cost-cutting and monetization playbook that worked on consumer apps runs into a different kind of resistance when the users are enterprise data teams who can migrate a workflow, but can't tolerate a surprise terms change. Bending Spoons is about to find out if the model scales up, or if it only worked because the stakes were low enough that nobody was watching closely.

  I once was shopping a manuscript to agents and I got such positive response to it & this one agent had asked for the exclusive manuscript. I agreed not knowing any better & turned down other requests for the full (stupid me), but it was actually autobiography presented as fiction, about my real life AOL catfish and I used his (alleged) real name because main plot points were directly related to the name & its meaning (& also f him he was a catfish). So her response in the end was that while she was very into my story she couldn't get past the terrible contrived name I had chosen for the character & ultimately had to pass I let myself feel quite embarrassed for ever writing such garbage & I shelved the whole thing, but then later that same name was used in so many popular TV shows, it's like a real name lots of people have

  @RichRautenstra1 @SeanOhhhh Live moderation is not as good as it was. I worked behind the scenes moderating online discussion (starting in the AOL days). I'm retired now, but the concept seems to be that if something offends you, block it. I'm not a fan of that. This needed to come down ASAP and cops called

  @vxylily Yes, I was PM'ing with a friend who was an employee of AOL, when she told me that a jumbo jet had just flown into one of the World Trade Towers. I ran to the tv just in time to see the second aircraft fly into the second tower, live. I will never forget it.
