@trengriffin I think the underrated trigger was the mass distribution and acceptance of AOL CD’s - the popular use is what made the public at large care about tech issues. Then the Y2K hype rounded out the decade.

What's the most promising open social network platform these days? Diaspora, Keybase, WikiTribune... all failed. Can we force interoperability with existing networks, like Trillian used to do, against AOL's wishes? Are barriers technical or legal or economic?

It’s a damn shame the “anonymous” #WWERaw GM wasn’t active on Retro Night. Instead of using the standard iPhone new message sound and a laptop, they could have used an old Windows desktop and five minutes of the Internet dialing up, complete with “You’ve Got Mail” from @AOL.
