@typedfemale @panchromaticity When I was a kid on AOL there was a webhost called something like ,"beseen" and every website on it was terrible. It feels related somehow.

@genentech I began to notice Dopples of me (those piggy backing onto my AOL payroll, etc.,) who seemed to be getting in trouble for being scum, and giving into blackmail to give away real Ed @eddonegan s DNA. Often this is Obama and Secret Service connected.

@emmy_zje Back years ago when aol was bombarding mailboxes with cds for signup i knew a few under 25 males who would pretend to be women in the chat rooms. They seemed to get off on the fantasy. I've never done it

I have participated in online critique groups a lot (though mostly back when they were on AOL sadly). Places where you can post your fiction and get feedback that you can learn from is critical. A paid platform is never the place to do that. This makes some people furious.

@BootlegGirl Oh? My friends and I were using AIM literally right up until AOL shut it down completely in 2017 at which point we all chose to essentially re-convene on Discord. I don't doubt you're right, that's just not what my own experience was like.

@RonnieFilyaw I was going to say they have limited lifespans because the companies that create them die quickly, but this is incorrect. eg: Officially licensed Transformers convention & fan club ran a forum for 7 years that was straight out of AOL era, & bad security resulted in CC fraud.
