@liturgicalgay 4 points. Never had AOL or MySpace accounts, never used dialup to access the Internet, and I never owned an encyclopedia. (I used dialup, but to access the older Usenet, not Internet. My parents owned the encyclopedia, not I.)

My little sister just graduated from AOL and I was never a fan of the school because the other kids were always out of pocket. I have no idea how she did it all those years.

Watching @hbomax is similar to dialing up AOL in 1998. Literally the worst streaming platform with heinous connection issues, buffering, horrible UX. No one QA’d the thing. Movie dropped out 4x and screen went to black, then just quit. Customer Service DGAF. Stay away.

@UntoldEVStories AOL spent something like $207 per customer on customer acquisition—an astronomical amount at the time. To acquire many millions of customers. Print, TV ads, and gajillions of AOL CD-ROMs sent in the mail. Massive marketing and advertising spend. The very opposite of Tesla.

@jack_turban @jbmckim And I should add since this article is about Boston. I was a Boston GLASS Kid at 16 and A LOT of kids my age used the computer labs to get on AOL and sell it. Even without Grindr, kids in tough situations will find ways to survive. There’s never enough support.
