Taking it waaayyy back @Steve_McNear but it’s a great comparison. My gigabit internet from @comcast feel like same quality as 1998 AOL dial up. Drops calls. Drops video. It’s horrible and @comcastcares has known about it for weeks but keeps lying and closing the issue report.

@d4doome Usenet was good until infiltrated & destroyed by spam. Unfiltered Usenet groups have no modern equivalent. X shadow bans & stifles, even under Elon. Facebook is horrid. But before I used Usenet I was banned from AOL forums. The original evil, from which sh*t sites like Facebook & Reddit are censorious de facto children. Also I caused these three groups to be created, in the day, when most anyone could create a group…

when the internet was still new, AOL (largeest web client & dial-up service) didn't let its users access the internet. Prodigy, a competitor, was the first to allow its users access to the internet. this looks similar to how frontier labs is trying to lock the harness with the model.

Marc Andreessen wrote a browser at 22 and took a company with no profits public at $2,900,000,000 in a single day. He built Mosaic as a student employee at the University of Illinois supercomputing center, paid $6.85 an hour. It was the first browser that showed images alongside text. The university claimed the software. He left for California, and Jim Clark, who had already founded Silicon Graphics, funded him to build it again from scratch. Netscape Navigator shipped in late 1994 and took most of the web inside months. The IPO came in August 1995, 16 months after founding. The company had almost no revenue and no profit at all. Shares were set at $28 and opened at $71. The close valued Netscape near $2,900,000,000. Wall Street had never priced a company on future users instead of earnings. Every dot-com listing that followed used the template. Microsoft bundled Internet Explorer with Windows for free. Netscape sold to AOL in 1999 and the browser disappeared. He co-founded Andreessen Horowitz in 2009 and now writes the checks. He proved a company could be worth billions before it made a dollar.

@Lefty_Foshizzle There's some poor geezer who still uses an AOL e-mail address running around dropping cashier's checks off at Walmart to get his piece of the pie.

@Noahpinion It is also pretty easy to imagine a world where a global, distributed network of open protocols that is mostly permissionsless did not happen in this way, and in which we only would have gotten a better AOL.

@spencerpratt you don't know **** about business, Hollywood, or history. you're comparing apples and oranges. ALL the guilds oppose the merger. WHY IS THAT? mergers mean less projects, less competition, lower wages (and you somehow missed AOL acquiring Time Warner (and WB) in 2000
