AAC was chosen for Freeview HD because Dolby had no equivalent receiver-mix audio desc'n support in 2009ish when the platform was standardised.

GSG2590 (@gsg2590) reported@JoshCF_ They're a joke now, two years ago the deal was £45 with basic freeview and Sky Q and now it's £63. They've also ended customer support on here and UK based customer calls. The app regularly messes up now, doesn't recognise you've paid and you end up getting charged again 😑

Tom (@TomCushnie) reported@x20mjs @AvonandsomerRob The World Cup feed is full range HDR and because our infrastructure is so far behind technlogy they crush the colours into a limited range to fit into Freeview. Red and yellows look really bad with this. Although it looks like BBC are handling the picture better

However the 'Freely' service currently being touted to replace Freeview in about 15 years time IS a streamed service which WILL be available via set top boxes/inbuilt IP provision in TV sets and probably an 'App'.
