Meanwhile had a chat with James at Plusnet yesterday, another nice guy, genuinely eager to help. Maybe by next weekend...?

Some providers may choose to offer a broadband (data) only service such as PlusNet who may also offer you to move everything to BT if you want a digital landline📞 service too

M (@ttyEngland) reported@mcopsey To try out PlusNet on EE's network, I'd get an EE PAYG SIM. Add Outgoing calls with a £10 bundle for 30 days - one off. PlusNet has no PAYG but 30 day only contracts. One must pay via DirectDebit though, whereas EE still do vouchers and cash, which may be better till satisfied.
