CompuServe when I first got online in 1995, MSN Messenger, the very occasional foray into Usenet. Tried AOL, ICQ, a few others. But never enjoyed them. Had both AIM and Yahoo Meseenger But only very rarely used them.

@Miss_Snuffy Self pity finds many friends online from the earliest days of community forums up to today's toxic social media. "Share your support" we used to say at AOL and people did and lots was valuable, but a deep streak of 'alternative truth' bedded down there too to solicit attention.

@lucperkins @monkchips I didn't mean to imply that Mastodon is like Twitter. I meant to imply that Twitter is like that weird **** AOL mail thing from 1995 where you could only send mail to other AOL users.

@thebeach345 I was listening to an NYU professor talking about it being the second worst acquisition in history behind Time Warner and AOL. He bought an $11 billion company for $44 billion. He is going to start charging a $20 subscription fee to verified users and he’s losing advertisers.

@elonmusk How about old school @AOL. Ya know, back when it was actually a good service and had proper chatrooms. Buy them next and MAKE AOL GREAT AGAIN!

@NewsNation Charging for something that was always free is a bad business model (AOL). First his nasty conspiracy theories about Paul Pelosi made national news which I am sure his advertisers didnt appreciate. Now he wants to charge for the blue check. Did he buy Twitter just to destroy it?

"In 2009, the original CompuServe service running on these machines finally ceased operation. 5 years later the remains of CompuServe fell into the hands of Verizon with the acquisition of AOL. The SC-40s were now destined for the dumpster."

@JamesBradleyCA What’s really funny is AOC and everyone that bought a Tesla enabled musk to lose $33B. It’s been called the second worst acquisition in history behind Aol Warner. He bought an $11B company for $44B. It’s funny to watch the Reps meltdown, thinking Dems care who owns Twitter.
