CompuServe when I first got online in 1995, MSN Messenger, the very occasional foray into Usenet. Tried AOL, ICQ, a few others. But never enjoyed them. Had both AIM and Yahoo Meseenger But only very rarely used them.

@Miss_Snuffy Self pity finds many friends online from the earliest days of community forums up to today's toxic social media. "Share your support" we used to say at AOL and people did and lots was valuable, but a deep streak of 'alternative truth' bedded down there too to solicit attention.

@Michaelrennick @harley3203 @Aviation_Intel He didn't really pony up $44B. He's on the hook for about 72% or $33.5B. Some $30B came from selling Tesla shares which leaves his stake in that company vulnerable because he does not have "founder" status. LBO debt service is $1B/year. It's closer to AOL-Time Warner in risk.

@jpsherman Yeah, IIRC his big idea at AOL was to turn Netscape into a Digg clone, which was eventually rebranded as Propeller, which I ended up shutting down and 301'ing across the network :P

I left AOL/HuffPo just before every writer there got blue ticked. I wondered if not having one would affect me or if I should have hung on longer. In the many years since, not having a blue tick has never come up, and I’ve only ever seen it used as a Twitterati insult so.
