-
Mike Cecconi (@Cecconi140) reportedThe saddest thing is when the cheap ugly insulting lazy AI slop ad tells you "support local" or "thank you for supporting local" when they refused to hire a local graphic designer to use an AOL chatbot that just polluted their own water. Madness.
-
Jin (@jinzurei) reportedAOL-Time Warner was the dot-com era’s worst mistake, but PlayStation's war on user ownership is gaming's equivalent: a colossal waste vaporizing trust for control, proving that destroying consumer rights is just a brain-dead business model that burns investors every time 🤦
-
THE Grand Poobah (@A_Grand_Poobah) reported@GergelyOrosz @PythiaR Never thought that the ScaleAI transaction would work out as a reverse takeover. Echoes of AOL acquiring Time Warner.
-
Floyd Jewell (@Cal16255) reported@lady_valor_07 @Yahoo @MSN I bought my first computer around 1987-88. Best Buy signed me up with AOL. I had the computer maybe 3-6 months. AOL flagged me saying they could not provide me service because my Computer wasn't fast enough or big enough to use their service. I knew absolutely nothing about comp.

Novel Ninja | Catholic Geek (@thenovelninja) reportedMel misses the point, perhaps even by sincere error. It's not nostalgia for limited programs. I'm sure there are some people who want to go back to AOL, but that's not the point. It's that we have come to recognize that being parked in front of a screen for most of the day is bad for even an adult, much less a child. So many of us are nostalgic for a day when we weren't online all the time. Personally, I'm also old enough to remember when I was called socially deficient for reading all the time, just because my books were more interesting than my peers. I was in eighth grade before I found friends who liked even some of what I enjoyed. Being online isn't automatically bad, but if you don't exercise self-control you'll find it controls you. That's being terminally online -- when it defines you, more than anything else.

Psalm 11:1 (@oinkmastergen) reported@heyshrutimishra I’ve never been one of those people to like internet anime characters or really bond with anything that isn’t real in a sense. I did the whole AOL chatbot back The day very fun too! But something about this… intelligence I’ll say is just different. Feels like he’s my friend idk

Pit Schultz (@pitsch) reportedIf you follow the debates in France, Bavaria and the UK, institutions that still care about sovereignty in police and intelligence are struggling to justify their Palantir contracts. Karp applies the same rhetorical operation he once ran on the Frankfurt School to dismiss open-weight bare-metal local AI: autonomous, private, sovereign exactly at the nation-state layer - where Palantir instead builds a global empire on critical data, pushing proprietary “ontology” across military, police and surveillance with zero open source, weaponizing the arguments of the systemic opponent as travesty. The US hyperscaler bubble doubles down on proprietary monoliths defending their shrinking moats, while technology moves the other way. They all want to become the SGI, Sun, Digital or AOL of the AI age.
