  Been going down a Luca Ferrari rabbit hole and honestly the guy might be running one of the smartest plays in tech right now. while everyone's out here trying to build the next big thing, he's just buying the old ones. Evernote, WeTransfer, Vimeo, Meetup, AOL. products people still love but that got bloated and neglected. bending spoons scoops them up cheap because everyone assumes they're dead. they're not, they're just badly run. and then the fun part. they move everything to italy, strip the company way down, hand the code to a bunch of young engineers who ship like crazy, and reprice the product to what it's actually worth. evernote got 75 updates in a year after basically going quiet. nobody's on call, everyone's just a "software engineer," salaries are flat. someone described it as private equity having a baby with google which is perfect. the numbers are kind of insane too. revenue per employee went from about $1.1m to $2.6m in two years, and they just IPO'd north of $18b and popped 40% on the first day. the takeaway that stuck with me: you don't have to invent the thing. you can just take something great that someone else fumbled and actually run it well. everyone's obsessed with zero to one and he's quietly getting rich on one to n.

  I’m sure this will sound like the roar of a dinosaur, but as a (remaining) AOL user, I had a serious tech issue of access, called them, they answered, and a very helpful, patient human walked me through a reprogramming procedure with one of my computers to restore access. Easy

  @GiniferL Authorized. So it wants me to authorize it. The problem is I bought that 20 years ago with a long gone AOL account. You gotta be ******* kidding me. I paid for that music. I haven't bought many digital downloads and I sure as ****** aren't going to anymore. Apple Buzz Kill. 😑

  People prefer to pay flat rates than metered. In today's age, you can give an agent monthly budget (flat rate) and not have to worry about how many micropayments it makes for products/services. Excerpt from "Case Against Micropayments": "What was the biggest complaint of AOL users? Not the widely mocked and irritating blue bar that appeared when members downloaded information. Not the frequent unsolicited junk e-mail. Not dropped connections. Their overwhelming gripe: the ticking clock. Users didn’t want to pay by the hour anymore. ... Case had heard from one AOL member who insisted that she was being cheated by AOL’s hourly rate pricing. When he checked her average monthly usage, he found that she would be paying AOL more under the flat-rate price of $19.95. When Case informed the user of that fact, her reaction was immediate. ‘I don’t care,’ she told an incredulous Case. ’I am being cheated by you.’"
