    Why are they removing functionality? I just don't understand how they can screw up a messaging app so badly. The UI is god awful, and it's still missing the most basic functionality we had 25 years ago in AOL Instant Messenger. I don't get it.

    @version_4 Eternal September comes from when AOL began mail distribution, and the internet was flooded with non-university users. (Eternal from the notion that the influx has never stopped since; Pandora’s box has been opened.) Great podcast.

    @AlecStapp AIM worked fine broken off from AOL. The thing you really want divested from FB is the identity management part. It should be separate from all the user-facing services.

    AOL used to dominate internet providers. Yahoo used to dominate search. Then better products came along. This will be how BTC and ETH go in the next decade. Hard to envision now. But they are both broken beyond repair.
