Christina Warren (@film_girl) reported from Seattle, WashingtonAnyway, we both used that AOL account until BellSouth started up its ISP service in the fall of 1996. The password wasn’t changed and the account was active until sometime in 1998 when the county finally did an audit and canceled it.

Why can’t the frontier labs do something like AOL did with its Greenhouse project and say OK, I will let you distill but we want equity in your company and/or a fee. AOL got equity for promotion/placement on the screen. (we committed 30+ million at MarketWatch, helped traffic and the ipo a lot, but worst company I have ever negotiated with). Anyway, apologies for the digression, but why couldn’t this be similar but for distillation access, and the labs like Anthropic and OpenAI could end up with a really interesting portfolio of companies, some of which might become quite valuable, and those smaller firms’ VCs could also benefit? Otherwise, does it really make sense for a huge swathe of the American technology industry to end up dependent on PRC models? Haven’t we learned any lessons from other industries where PRC firms have been able to come in at a very low cost with good products and effectively create dependencies that crowd at all other competitors? And now we are talking about the most transformative industry in many years, and it could be even worse if it’s built in part through some problematic practices in terms of distillation attacks and export control violations, if some of US government’s and frontier labs’ claims are true?

Long before AOL dial up. F.I.N.S. works with all software or no computers at all like morse code after a first strike during the Cold War my SOS.

Nick Huber (@sweatystartup) reportedOne of the most underrated skill in business: writing a good email. 350+ billion emails are sent every day. Nobody talks about email etiquette. The people who are good at it shine. The people who aren't have a disadvantage and don't even know it. Here's how to fix it: Keep it short. No email should ever be over 150 words. Paragraphs should never be more than 4 lines. When you write an important email, spend just as much time cutting it down as you spent writing it. Go line by line. Ask: is this sentence absolutely necessary? Can I combine these two into one? Ditch the Comcast, AOL, and Hotmail addresses. Set up a professional email on your own domain using Google Workspace. Don't put "CEO" in your signature if you're a startup with no employees. I know you founded the company. Put "owner" or "founder." When I see "CEO" from a company I know is brand new, I roll my eyes. Never criticize anyone in a reply-all. If people are CC'd, it means they want to be kept in the loop, so reply all to keep them there. And remember: email is permanent. Don't put anything in writing you wouldn't want surfacing years later. Small thing. Massive advantage if you're one of the few who actually does it right.
