@BekoUK I bought a Beko VCS5125AR Upright Vacuum Cleaner in Red from AOL 27/2/21 and in the past week it has cut out after using it for 10mins and did not restart for 20mins. Not happy. I would like it swapped for a hoover that works competently for the use it was bought for!

@PhillipsDe13341 I got an AT&T monthly phone bill once for over $1,000. Turns out that AOL CD for dialup internet that I was using temporarily while my DSL line was being fixed was set to auto-reconnect and had chosen a toll number. AT&T did not back down. So I paid the bill and stopped being an AT&T customer for about 20 years.

Before the AI kings, there was another king. His story tells you exactly how AI race ends. In the 90s, AOL was the internet. If you wanted to go online, you went through AOL. Their CDs were in every mailbox in America. At their peak they were worth more than Disney, Ford and Boeing combined. They even bought Time Warner, the biggest media empire on earth, like it was a snack. Then the internet became a utility. It moved to the companies holding the infra, the telecom guys. And AOL's birthright on the internet vanished. The pipe owners made real money, AT&T still makes billions every year, but at utility margins. The crazy money showed up at the application layer in the next decade. Google, Amazon, Netflix. They didn't own the internet. They just paid for it like everyone else and built the best service on top. The bottom layer was open to anyone at a price, so the top layer went to whoever served the customer best. No birthright. Just service. Now let's look at AI. Today the frontier labs stand where AOL stood in the late 90s. They own the models, they own the access, they are the most valuable companies of this era. But intelligence is already becoming a utility with open weights. The model is turning into the pipe, and the pipe will move to whoever hosts it cheapest. Better chips, cheaper power, data centers next to geothermal plants or up in orbit. Good business, real money, but utility margins. And again, the crazy money will show up one layer above, again. Apps built on open intelligence, paying for it like everyone pays for internet, winning because they serve the customer best. Nobody has a birthright there. Not even the labs. They can compete for it, with everyone else at a level playing field. The internet made AOL the king and then made the internet free. AI is about to do the same thing to its kings.

@DudespostingWs Someone across town used to talk **** to him on AOL and he'd be at their door in 8 ******* minutes on foot

The crazy part about having dial-up internet was we had to add an extra ~20 minutes to our time of arrival because we had to turn on the computer, open the AOL app, sign in, and then wait for that long dial-up tone before going to the MapQuest site to write down directions.

Wow surprisingly tone deaf post from an @openai top executive. Feels like AOL or Compuserve arguing about how dangerous and bad for innovation an open internet would be. Permissionless innovation. Thatโ€™s what open weight models offer.

@syruproxy We met on an AOL aviation message board. ๐Ÿคญ We crossed paths many times as kids but never met. We met in person a few weeks after nonstop phone calls and we've never been apart. I was on furlough from the airline I flew with, and I said no when they called me back. ๐Ÿ“Ÿ didn't work in the countries I flew to and we were inseparable by then. 30 years ago. ๐Ÿฉถ

@quirkyloner I remember being an internet elitist at age 12 and looking down on AOL users (esp AOL chatrooms) as uncultured swine while I, an intellectual, used IRC for my chat needs. While also using AOL for my internet lol

@Barbara0699 @theliamnissan Iโ€™m almost embarrassed to say that I still use an AOL account for shopping, etc. I get enough free stuff from them to make it worthwhile, and theyโ€™re great at filtering out the garbage.

@nostalgames69 Bought a dreamcast just for to play this game. Unfortunately, AOL didn't work on dreamcast. We got DSL a few months later but we had no router and I didn't have the network adapter. The only way to connect online was to directly plug in the modem to it. Dad was not cool with it.
