"Share your support" we used to say at AOL and people did and lots was valuable, but a deep streak of 'alternative truth' bedded down there too to solicit attention.

With MSN Explorer (yes that was a thing in 2001, competing with AOL) we enabled "toast notifications" and the name was because "the little thing popped like the toast on the screensavers." Real toast never does that. It sits there. It sometimes Burns.

Maybe 1-2 kids talked to each other online, but the internet shifted with AOL in '94 - '95. Seems like a ton of large companies let employees take home their old work PCs. Two years later the combined company wrote down about $99,000,000,000 in a single year. That number is larger than the annual output of most countries. By 2009 the two halves were separated again, and the pieces were worth a fraction of what they carried in. Every analyst covering the deal called it visionary. The vote took minutes. The unwind took nine years.

AOL and UUNET, the largest Internet Service Provider at the time, were both headquartered here. A lot of fiber was already in the ground and the power situation was favorable.
