With MSN Explorer (yes that was a thing in 2001, competing with AOL) we enabled "toast notifications" and the name was because "the little thing popped like the toast on the screensavers." Real toast never does that. It sits there. It sometimes Burns.

"Share your support" we used to say at AOL and people did and lots was valuable, but a deep streak of 'alternative truth' bedded down there too to solicit attention.

I couldn't believe it the other day when he said he was having problems with his email and he revealed that it was AOL. He's also constantly complaining about pop-up ads. I mean seriously who even sees those anymore when they are so easily eliminated?

Does anyone actually think Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Oracle, IBM, X/Twitter, and all of the other big tech companies will just allow these 2 badly run startups to capture the AI market? OpenAI and Anthropic don't have a moat or sustainable competitive advantage. To win they have to not only develop a moat but penetrate some of the most fortified moats. Model quality isn't a moat. Kimi, Grok, Deepseek proved that. Inference will become a commodity utility that requires massive CapEx that neither can finance. Interface is where the moat is the weakest. OpenAI and Anthropic do not own the apps or the OS. The OS and apps are owned by parties who view OpenAI or Anthropic as threats, and they can complicate things very easily. As if that is not grim enough, AI sovereignty will become an issue. Consumers will want their iCloud data to stay in iCloud, their OneDrive data to stay in OneDrive, etc. Enterprise customers will want AI from their cloud providers to reduce egress and for performance + IP reasons. It is honestly hard to imagine a world where OpenAI and Anthropic survive as they are. They will either morph into companies with entirely different value offerings or die like Compuserve and AOL.

Incredibly obvious by AOL Mail being the same amount of time as Twitter, this is boomers who click yes on every single pop-up they are given and were served a pop up on some scammy site or an email to "help with a brief survey" that led them to install the browser extension they used to get this data. Literally no one else would intentionally install a browser extension to track how they use their computer.

Nick Huber (@sweatystartup) reportedOne of the most underrated skill in business: writing a good email. 350+ billion emails are sent every day. Nobody talks about email etiquette. The people who are good at it shine. The people who aren't have a disadvantage and don't even know it. Here's how to fix it: Keep it short. No email should ever be over 150 words. Paragraphs should never be more than 4 lines. When you write an important email, spend just as much time cutting it down as you spent writing it. Go line by line. Ask: is this sentence absolutely necessary? Can I combine these two into one? Ditch the Comcast, AOL, and Hotmail addresses. Set up a professional email on your own domain using Google Workspace. Don't put "CEO" in your signature if you're a startup with no employees. I know you founded the company. Put "owner" or "founder." When I see "CEO" from a company I know is brand new, I roll my eyes. Never criticize anyone in a reply-all. If people are CC'd, it means they want to be kept in the loop, so reply all to keep them there. And remember: email is permanent. Don't put anything in writing you wouldn't want surfacing years later. Small thing. Massive advantage if you're one of the few who actually does it right.

HitNail (@Hitnail) reported@AOL has me locked out of my old emails. I have the email and passwords. Each is the other's recovery email and both want me to verify with a code sent to the other. An hour on hold and AOL tells me they won't help unless I pay them. Then they hung up on me.
