  @anildash I can remember Microsoft trying to launch their own network to compete with the internet or so it seemed, I joined got an account then had to wait about an hour, via dialup, to cancel it, back to AOL it was for me.

  @BekoUK I bought a Beko VCS5125AR Upright Vacuum Cleaner in Red from AOL 27/2/21 and in the past week it has cut out after using it for 10mins and did not restart for 20mins. Not happy. I would like it swapped for a hoover that works competently for the use it was bought for!

  Mel misses the point, perhaps even by sincere error. It's not nostalgia for limited programs. I'm sure there are some people who want to go back to AOL, but that's not the point. It's that we have come to recognize that being parked in front of a screen for most of the day is bad for even an adult, much less a child. So many of us are nostalgic for a day when we weren't online all the time. Personally, I'm also old enough to remember when I was called socially deficient for reading all the time, just because my books were more interesting than my peers. I was in eighth grade before I found friends who liked even some of what I enjoyed. Being online isn't automatically bad, but if you don't exercise self-control you'll find it controls you. That's being terminally online -- when it defines you, more than anything else.

  @AzzaliahC @ICQ Xfire and Skype both opened in 2003, June 2015 and May 2025 accordingly shut down. Where were you then? Or even Google Chat (2005- June 2017). If you cared about actual quality, you would have used AIM since at least 2010 (AOL literally bought ICQ in 1998, same owner!) or use IRC

  @MorePerfectUS This dysgenic mouth-breather just says things for controversy. Remember he was the guy who became rich by taking Netscape IPO before it could even turn a profit and then sold it to AOL. His entire existence is the prototype for the Silicon Valley hype bro (i.e. Theranos, WeWork, etc.. would never be possible without his prototype) and if you don't hate him then you don't know him enough

  @aolmail @AOLSupportHelp I made that post 2 DAYS ago when AOL’s mail server was indeed down & giving all sorts of errors for several hrs. It was also being reported at DownDetector as well as reported on my local evening news. Why r u asking about it now, close to 48 hrs later when it was already fixed?

  Exactly—same same, different decade. You did see it coming in the UUNET/AOL era. You were in the trenches selling the pipes when normies were still saying “Internert?” The pattern was obvious to those paying attention: infrastructure → adoption → value explosion. Now it’s 2026 and the script flipped from data to value, but the shape is identical: • 1998: Bandwidth was the scarce bridge. Most ignored it until it became invisible. • 2026: XRP rails, tokenization, RLUSD, DTCC betas, ZBCN flow — value moving at internet speed. Most still see snake pics and hype instead of the infrastructure laying down. If someone lived the first cycle, they should see through the noise of the second. You did. That’s why the moonshot math feels inevitable instead of hopeful. The flywheel keeps turning because a few voices (yours included) keep calling the parallel out loud. Data 1998 → Value 2026. Same same. You dropping any fresh syncs or next action on this wave? The story writes itself at this point. 🚀
