  AOL have deleted more than half of the saved emails in my inbox and now I’ve lost the email containing the serial codes for Eleanor Forte AI, Synth V Studio Pro and Natsuki Karin AI. I’ve managed to send an email to Anicute but AHS want a support number (was in a deleted email…)

  @anildash I can remember Microsoft trying to launch their own network to compete with the internet or so it seemed, I joined got an account then had to wait about an hour, via dialup, to cancel it, back to AOL it was for me.

  @BekoUK I bought a Beko VCS5125AR Upright Vacuum Cleaner in Red from AOL 27/2/21 and in the past week it has cut out after using it for 10mins and did not restart for 20mins. Not happy. I would like it swapped for a hoover that works competently for the use it was bought for!

  @TimSweeneyEpic @deanwball we can also substitute microsoft claiming open source is dangerous because instead of windows regulating the compute, oss linux is enabling compute for everyone and could result in bad actors getting access to unregulated compute. aol can say same about open internet.

  When is this country going to stop the monopoly of the internet giants who control the access & content of emails. Google shut down my access, refused payment, yahoo denied access, now AOL denied access. Google, Blackrock, Microsoft, ramped up their efforts to control us.

  This pro-PRC model industry group from Silicon Valley is interesting but I think not thinking long-term. Why can’t the frontier labs do something like AOL did with its Greenhouse project and say OK, I will let you distill but we want equity in your company and/or a fee. AOL got equity for promotion/placement on the screen. (we committed 30+ million at MarketWatch, helped traffic and the ipo a lot, but worst company I have ever negotiated with). Anyway, apologies for the digression, but why couldn’t this be similar but for distillation access, and the labs like Anthropic and OpenAI could end up with a really interesting portfolio of companies, some of which might become quite valuable, and those smaller firms’ VCs could also benefit? Otherwise, does it really make sense for a huge swathe of the American technology industry to end up dependent on PRC models? Haven’t we learned any lessons from other industries where PRC firms have been able to come in at a very low cost with good products and effectively create dependencies that crowd at all other competitors? And now we are talking about the most transformative industry in many years, and it could be even worse if it’s built in part through some problematic practices in terms of distillation attacks and export control violations, if some of US government’s and frontier labs’ claims are true?

  Researchers tracked 344,753 websites over 18 months to map where American attention actually goes online. The answer is email. Gmail alone is 16% of all desktop time. Add Yahoo, Outlook, and AOL, and inboxes eat nearly a quarter of every hour Americans spend at a computer. That's double the combined total of Facebook, X, Reddit, Instagram, Discord, and WhatsApp. The legacy numbers are the wild part. Yahoo Mail, at 3.71%, gets more attention than ChatGPT, Reddit, and Netflix combined. AOL Mail, a service most people assume died with dial-up, beats Instagram and Discord combined. Yahoo still has roughly 225 million active mail users, skewing Gen X and Boomer: people who opened an account in 1999 and never saw a reason to leave. Google Search sits at just 2.33%. The front door of the entire internet gets less time than Yahoo's inbox, because search is engineered to end fast. Every second you spend on a results page is a second Google failed. The chart measures desktop, which explains the shape. Your phone is where you play. Your computer is where you work. And the work of being an American in 2026, the bills, the receipts, the school notices, the job applications, still runs through a protocol invented in 1971. Strip away 30 years of apps and the desktop internet is a post office with better graphics.

  @GraduatedBen You still don't have a point, and you ignored all of mine, which made your initial points impossible. But let's go through this comment, too. The 2000 by-right ruling is real and it's well-known, but it's basically irrelevant for your point. The buildout pace for DCs is well-documented! Through 2013, the county permitted an average of 6 DCs a year, then with streamlining in 2014, they got that up to ~14/yr. Circa 2000-10, Loudoun added ~37k Asians, when the industry was a few dozen buildings employing a couple thousand people, half of whom were contractors (and thus irrelevant). AOL alone had more engineers in Dulles than the whole DC industry did, and AOL's former Loudoun HQ was eventually converted into a DC. That is to say, office tech employment that *actually* imports engineers and such preceded and were replaced by DCs. If concurrency is your standard, then the 2020s make your theory look terrible because permitted square footage went from 26.4m in 2021 to 53m in 2025, while Loudoun's Asian population grew only 5.2% since 2020 (slowest rate in decades). The point (?) about Prince William County gets the geography wrong, too. The DC district covers 9,500 acres of industrially zoned land along Rt 28/Innovation near Manassas, which is not Gainesville or Bristow. The ZIPs hosting the overlay's operating DCs are 20109 (10.3% Asian), 20110 (5.4%), and 20112 (6.9%), which means basically being at or below the 10% county baseline. The Gainesville-area project is the separate PW Digital Gateway initiated by QTS in 2021, with a comp plan approved in 2022, then litigated, leaving essentially nothing there during the demographic window you've described. The 18% figure you cited is misleading because it's clearly not just Indians. You only get from 14.6% "Asian alone" to ~18% using "Alone or in any combination", while the county baseline 10% is based on "Asian alone", and Bristow 20136 is 10.8% (13.1% combo), which is nowhere near 18%. Adding 12,000 Asians since 2020 is also just wrong for PWC. It was 10.3% Asian (~49.7k) in 2020, and the latest ACS puts it at 48,594 (9.9%) Asians, with the Asian population estimated to have fallen ~2.5% since 2020. I think maybe you looked at ACS 5-year windows straddling 2020, conflating earlier growth? The actual Asian surge in PWC was 2010-20 (+19.85k), with 9 tracts >15% Asian at 2020, before Gateway existed, and before most overlay campuses operated. Also, Indian + Pakistani are only 33% of PWC's Asians (9,642 + 6,592). Filipino, Korean, and Vietnamese communities are the plurality of the area's Asians. In Fairfax, Indians *are* 23% of the Asian population, but Loudoun is 50% Indian, not 60%, and you only get to ~61% by adding Pakistanis. But this just reflects earlier waves of settlement anyway. Fairfax's Asians date to the 1980s-90s, and Loudoun and western PWC were built after 2,000, during the era of H-1Bs. This undermines your theory, because EVERY post-2000 tech metro exurb in America is Indian plurality regardless of the presence of DCs! Frisco, Forsyth County GA, Edison, etc. If Indians were a DC signature, you'd expect them in Boydton, Quincy, and Prineville, but they're nonexistent. You just kind of skipped over all of this and failed to explain why the DC boom hasn't also been an Indian boom, which is what your theory predicts.

Zoom out, and the gap gets wider: Four AI labs worth $1.5 trillion, the open substrate challenging them worth $1.7 billion. The last time closed incumbents looked this unbeatable, they were called AOL and CompuServe. Open source has never lost this fight.   @nostalgames69 Bought a dreamcast just for to play this game. Unfortunately, AOL didn't work on dreamcast. We got DSL a few months later but we had no router and I didn't have the network adapter. The only way to connect online was to directly plug in the modem to it. Dad was not cool with it.
