@anildash I can remember Microsoft trying to launch their own network to compete with the internet or so it seemed, I joined got an account then had to wait about an hour, via dialup, to cancel it, back to AOL it was for me.

  • sweetmax22
    Maxine Sweetman-Ive (@sweetmax22) reported from Southend-on-Sea, England

@BekoUK I bought a Beko VCS5125AR Upright Vacuum Cleaner in Red from AOL 27/2/21 and in the past week it has cut out after using it for 10mins and did not restart for 20mins. Not happy. I would like it swapped for a hoover that works competently for the use it was bought for!

@theretrobyte I think I would still have been with Dungeon/FlexNet back then. Never used any of the likes of AOL, Freeserve, etc.

AOL have deleted more than half of the saved emails in my inbox and now I’ve lost the email containing the serial codes for Eleanor Forte AI, Synth V Studio Pro and Natsuki Karin AI. I’ve managed to send an email to Anicute but AHS want a support number (was in a deleted email…)

  • ElvinBox

@aolmail assume the email telling me my request to terminate my AOL account; which of course I did not, will be carried out in 3 working days, is obviously a scam email? Many thanks in advance xx

@RetiredLifeNC @pokey_chi @Ashton_1nvests The problem is finding winners in hindsight always looks like a mistake. Imagine holding and never selling AOL.

As someone who experienced AOL chatrooms at 12 years old, I get that there should be restrictions and oversight. But I can’t help but feel like maybe there’s better ways to go about it than ID laws or outright bans that don’t consider whether or not a site is 100% adult-oriented.

🚨 THIS IS HOW THE CRASH BEGINS The S&P 500 is tracing the exact same peak pattern as 2007. Back then, Blackstone went public at the absolute top of that cycle. The financial crisis followed months later. Now SpaceX just did the exact same thing. Here's how it works: When a mega-company goes public, it vacuums up massive amounts of capital. Investors dump other assets just to buy the "IPO of the decade." This drains liquidity from the rest of the market and starves the bull run of its fuel. That's what's happening right now. The Magnificent 7 lost $2.3 trillion in a single month. Microsoft: -20% Nvidia: -13% Apple: -8% The playbook never changes. 2000: AOL & Time Warner merged → dot-com bubble peak. 2011: Glencore went public → commodities supercycle top. 2021: Coinbase IPO'd → crypto cycle peak. This always ends the same way. But now it's even worse because Anthropic and OpenAI are waiting in line. Smart money never sells at the bottom. They sell to you at the peak. These mega IPOs aren't a sign of market strength. They're the exit doors slamming shut. You've been warned. Remember, I accurately predicted the recent $82K BTC bull trap and nailed the $111K top in October. My next call will be even more important. Turn on notifications. Most people will follow me too late.

i don't buy the "ai search replaces Google" thesis. the data says the opposite is happening. Cloudflare Radar, may 2026: every ai chatbot — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity — sends 0.29% of global search referrals. Google sends 87.63%. 301-to-1. Anthropic's ClaudeBot crawls 11,122 pages for every human visit it returns vs Google's 5:1. Alphabet Q1 2026 filing: Google search revenue $60.4B, +19% yoy, up from +17% in Q4. ai overviews hit 2.5B monthly users; ai mode crossed 1B. alphabet says ai overviews monetize at rates "similar to traditional search" (june 2026 investor presentation). the kill-google thesis is showing up as negative signal in the actual p&l. Perplexity — the consensus poster child — killed its entire ad business in feb (Financial Times, The Verge). ads generated $20K against $34M revenue. exec quote: "a user would just start doubting everything." a company that can't make advertising work cannot disrupt a $60B/quarter advertising business. the consensus pusher worth countering specifically — @sarahdingwang at a16z, who led Exa's $250M Series C at $2.2B in may. her line: "agents will search the web more than humans this year. soon orders of magnitudes more." historical analog — Netscape 1994-98. the next platform that would reduce windows to "a poorly debugged set of device drivers." 80% share, record ipo. microsoft bundled IE for free. netscape sold to AOL for scrap. the company that captured the value was the one everyone thought netscape would displace — Google, founded 1998 — the services layer above the commodity. counter-position: ai search isn't replacing Google. Google is becoming ai search. standalone players are fighting netscape's war while the incumbent absorbs the tech into a surface 2.5B people already use. investor read: Exa at $2.2B and Perplexity at $22B are priced for a market-share takeover the referral data says isn't happening. the smarter bet is the layer that monetizes the ai-overview expansion Google is driving.

The funny thing is if you just cancelled your internet after the trial period AOL would just mail you another trial disk. We never paid for internet when I was a kid.

@zedamex @el_mesa @RinoTheBouncer That still requires players to have a strong enough internet connection to do these things. What do you propose people in rural areas with poor or zero home internet access should do? AOL shut down back in Sept 2025 which was one of the few options rural families rely on.

This makes me really sad because AX used to kick complete *** I loved it so much. I started going when I was in my mid-teens, one time I hung out with a bunch of the cast of 03 FMA because of an AOL fan chat they'd come and groupwatch the new episodes with us in, Mike McFarland bought us lunch because my friend was rude and thought we weren't paying....
