On #CovidCampus: a family friend in his late 60’s just emailed me from his AOL account, subject line “Hello this is [his name],” to ask if I could come over to help him figure out Zoom for the class he’s adjuncting at a major university, so, yeah, this isn’t going to go smoothly.

@doctorwhoviana @crosa1988 But they loved the infomercial I had written (which never aired). They thought I “understood them.” So they hired me to do all sorts of other stuff. They essentially paid for my 1st condo. Those were the days. But then AOL made a tragically wrong turn. Interesting how that goes.

  • LevonHughey Levon Hughey (@LevonHughey) reported from Manhattan, New York

@TinaDesireeBerg This was a mindfuck to say the least. The piece of **** who made the poll did the old capital “i”/lower case “L” trick in the username. I used to do **** like that in AOL chat rooms back in the 2000s to **** with people.

  • c_lawson Curtis M. Lawson (@c_lawson) reported

@Y3ll0wZlgN I don't remember ever having any issues with AOL, and I was WAYYYY more offensive of a person in my early twenties ha ha. That being said, I wasn't very public either.

@Vivian64626821 Hi Vivian. Aol help on Twitter contacted me and they were very helpful. told me it was spam immediately and to block the sender. Put in Spam folder. Good to know you can get help here. Thanks!

  • Y3ll0wZlgN Schopenhorror (@Y3ll0wZlgN) reported

@c_lawson Never been ”jailed” but I’ve ditched FB for the same reason when it displayed authoritarian tendencies like AOL did. “Community standards”is BS excuse back then, and it still is. Nonexistent in the Interwebs. Were only brought in to justify controlling content not their liking.

  • mtnbdgr MountainBadger (@mtnbdgr) reported

@GradeKangusBeef @Moridin1024 I love the stasis boxes and a lot of what’s in them is stuff we already knew about so it’s cool to see. And yeah, a way to limit traveling is nice. But why conflate traveling and TAR? We spend a ton of time w/ AoL channelers in TAR and they never think this might be useful. 1/2

  • l_amour_ecosi do it for the trees! the whales! the primates!! ✨ (@l_amour_ecosi) reported

He struggled really bad with getting diagnosed bipolar. But I studied it right away. I had the definition memorized after finding it on an AOL webpage after overhearing my parents arguing.

  • financeguy74 Seán Murray | 3531.eth | sean2.eth (@financeguy74) reported

@DesignedDNA @ENSteve_eth I had ICQ but I never really got into it. Almost everyone I needed to talk to was on AOL and later AIM.

  • bb_icia Painter (@bb_icia) reported

@bronwengwriter Thanks Bronwen. It just looks dodgy. Mentions previous emails, which i haven't had. Done customer help on AOL, but they haven't replied yet.

  • Y3ll0wZlgN Schopenhorror (@Y3ll0wZlgN) reported

@c_lawson I put in a few of my artwork & my poetry. They took it down. I challenged them on that. AOL kept falling back on “community standards” bit. Kept telling them they don’t exist. “Community”is just a word. Everybody has their standards. Even I have standards. Eventually, ditched it.
