    @TownBizTony Dude I remember the 56K days and at times AOL would have a bad day and you saw 28.8 or 14.4 pop up it was hell

    @maximlott @PCivilization @PrisonPlanet The barriers to creating a web site are far lower than creating a power company. Weโ€™ve had competing social network companies for years, from AOL to MySpace to G+. Creating another WalMart would be harder, but we donโ€™t demand they give away products for free.

    @goingforbrooke but when everyone in the US had aim (bc aol was so popular as an isp), everyone in europe + latam had msn messenger (because hotmail was so popular as free email with free storage, when your isp email had no storage and would change if you changed isps). so also network effects.

    @CZOctober25 @SarahSevans2000 I never had a waterbed or AOL either but the rest of them I had or used at one point. My first Internet was dial up and it drove people crazy. Because I had only one phone line and people would try to call me on the phone and the line was always busy because I was on the Internet

    @JeffJSays in 1997 i had our old clunker computer hidden in my closet with extension cord under the carpet around the bed to power so i could chat with friends on AOL dialup and play roller coaster tycoon after folks went to bed, never got caught. these kids got it easy
