@octothorpe PCPursuit wasn’t shenanigans. Totally legit service that let you use TeleNet (dial up backbone used by aol and compuserve) to make outbound calls in other regions. Was like $30/month. Now you could get to places to learn about shenanigans using it…

  • johnklin John K. Lin (@johnklin) reported from Mountain View, California

@ccwu I remember being a Quantum Link subscriber on my Commodore 64 and 300 baud modem and that service disappearing fairly quickly. I only learned later from Kara Swisher's book on AOL that Quantum Link was the precursor to AOL.

  • mactavish mactavish 🌎 🏳️‍🌈 💙💜❤️ 🦄❄️♿ (@mactavish) reported from Fremont, California

@hankgreen Older than you but too poor to have a computer until AOL dialup because early childhood ed professionals get paid crap

@Foone Call me when you support vchat. I tried to find info on the protocol extensions for that a while back, but much like sites on the original AOL, I wasn't able to find much...

  • MikeT298 Mike (@MikeT298) reported

@AOL is still a scam. Have had my email with them 20+ years. Locked out of it today and they want me to wait 3 days to unlock it or pay $30.00 WTF.

  • RebaHere knReba Buckner (@RebaHere) reported

...we know... Joe and the *** are serious idiots .harps.://www.aol.com/u-china-relationship-going-down-191424867.html

  • margiesbooth mackenzie (@margiesbooth) reported

@lilygoldenhair aol was one of the first email service providers, the only people who still use it are boomers, but i'm old enough to have had an account as a young child, but not old enough to have used aim or anything.

  • TearsAims (@TearsAims) reported

    @J0shszn No **** AOL #gangshit #playwiththiscoc

  • JonVirtual Jon Oakes (@JonVirtual) reported

@bai0 @internetarchive I used to work for CompuServe. When AOL (damn them) shut it down, they DID NOT BACK UP THE FORUMS. Decades of the early pre-internet were lost. Actually useful and good discussions from history are gone forever. It was MAYBE 3 TB of text. I run a server with 72 tb. Tragic.

  • DunstanShgon Shgon Dunstan (@DunstanShgon) reported

@SoB_Erotica @Ardamora @Gaston04425964 It’s *not* a callandor level artifact. Pretty explicitly so. In the AoL, there was an entire global network of the things to control the weather. Each only intended to cover about the same area as a Windfinder.

  • ekozie @Eli_K_dot_swf (@ekozie) reported

anyone use fiverr? i made one as a joke and holy ****, haven't seen this much spam since my last aol account. if there's some corroboration, this could be a juicy short $fvrr

  • ScottAMullin Scott Mullin (@ScottAMullin) reported

@SuperASASSN Tweets defending starlink won’t age well once those satellites start failing, the service is compared unfavorably to dialup, and it becomes known that astronomy paid a price. Imagine someone in 1995 defending AOL like this
