It's to do with screening out special characters to prevent SQL injection attacks & the like, however if they actually sanatised their database inputs correctly, it would be a non-problem. Lazy design

Called into store to get a new sim as the one (which has worked for 3 years) doesn’t work in any phone. Got the new sim, got home to set it up. And look, you need to receive a text via a code. Perfect.
