My mother died in 2003 and trying to close her BT landline account was a nightmare. The person I spoke to kept saying “we need to speak to the customer”! Finally I went into the BT sales centre saw a charming lady and in 20 minutes I had finished.

I called up on monday (whilst waiting for my order) as the link i was sent to ‘upgrade now’ let me go all the way through to payment and never once mentioned out of stock or a delay. I said I was ending the contract. 10 mins later they rang to offer her new channels free if she stayed. I replied “ she’s bloody dead and and God has sky in heaven.” They got the point! I’d even emailed.

For your info with regard to your issue - virgin media have just been fined £28m for preventing people ending their contracts. Perhaps talks to the culture internally that you are describing
